  24.             This is  a  mail  response  facility  which  will  return  a
  25.             specific GenBank entry requested via e-mail.  The server can
  26.             be accessed on the Internet, BITNET, and UUCP networks.

  28.             Please  be  aware  that  a  mail  response  program  is  not
  29.             ``smart'' and can only respond to a limited set of commands.
  30.             GenBank entries are available by name and  accession  number
  31.             only.

  67.             ``HELP'' will result in a small help file being  sent  back,
  68.             and  everyone should request the help message.  It will con-
  69.             tain  up-to-date  information  about  the  server,   access,
  70.             release  numbers,  and  policies.   The  help  message  also
  71.             includes all index names, so ``SEND INDEX'' no longer works.
  72.             ``SEND  INDEX  index_name''  (where ``index_name'' is one of
  73.             the index files listed in the HELP message) will work.

  75.             SEND LOCUS genbank_locus_name will  return  via  e-mail  the
  76.             requested  locus  if  it  exists, and an error message if it
  77.             does not.  Use the HELP message index file to find the  name
  78.             of the entry, or use the accession number.

  82.             The system is accessible via Internet e-mail.  It  can  also
  83.             be  reached  via  USENET at uhnix2!genbank-server. Note that
  84.             large GenBank entries (Lambda, EBV,  tobacco  and  liverwort
  85.             chloroplasts) may not make it through the thread of mailers.
  86.             UUCP mailers, in particular, silently  enforce  a  limit  of
  87.             64,000  characters in a single mail message.  Note also that
  88.             Usenet mail is  very  unreliable;  you  should  consult  the
  89.             ``pathalias''  database  to  construct a mail path from your
  90.             machine to uhnix2.  A local Unix mail wizard may be able  to
  91.             help.

  99.             The server runs every half hour and  will  handle  only  one
  100.             request at a time.  If you want more than one entry, send in
  101.             separate requests.   Large  GenBank  entries  (Lambda,  EBV,
  102.             tobacco  and liverwort chloroplasts entries) may not make it
  103.             through the thread of mailers.  UUCP mailers, in particular,
  104.             silently  enforce  a  limit of 64,000 characters in a single
  105.             mail message.  Note also that Usenet mail  is  very  unreli-

  110.             The server contains a simple response to someone asking  for
  111.             too  many  loci  or  otherwise abusing the service: it stops
  112.             working for them. Please restrict your requests to  no  more
  113.             than  one  or two a day; if the demand is too great the ser-
  114.             vice will randomly choose requests to  ignore,  or  will  be
  115.

  129.             The current version of GenBank on the server is Release  59.
  130.             The  server is updated twice a year due to monetary and disk
  131.             space constraints.  We will  soon  be  updating  the  server
  132.             daily;  as entries are completed by GenBank they will appear
  133.             on the server.
